CorduroyA durable fabric of twisted fibers woven to lay parallel to one another forming a distinctive 'cord' pattern. Usually tufted (or 'ribbed') giving a velvety appearance, and showing a channel (bare to the base fabric) between tufts (or ribs). The width of the cord is called the wale, with wide wale fabric used for trousers and medium, narrow and fine wale fabric used in other types of garments. From the French
cord du roi meaning "cloth of the king."
